Denton Endowment

The Award

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston (AGH) awards the Sally Landrum Excellence in Teaching award to a worthy employee in the Catholic School System annually. The award is named for former AGH Superintendent and a staunch supporter of Catholic education, Sally Landrum.  In celebration of her life and work, the award is presented to a teacher who exemplifies strong Catholic faith, community spirit, and provides rigorous academic instruction. Additionally, a $1,500 monetary award is given to the teacher for his/her designation.

Donna Denton

St. John Paul II Catholic School (StJPII) humbly announces the recipient of the 2018-19 Sally Landrum Excellence in Teaching award was presented to 30-year Catholic educator Mrs. Donna Denton.  While she began her career teaching kindergarten, for most of the 27 years she has been at StJPII Mrs. Denton has devoted herself to 3rd grade students. Mrs. Denton was bestowed this award of excellence during the AGH's annual welcome back to school Mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston on Friday, August 10, 2018.  Mrs. Denton is always a favorite among current and former students, and alumnus William Colgan, StJPII Class of 2014, states this about her, "I will always remember Mrs. Denton for modeling her strong Catholic faith and taking the time to get to know me as an individual. She loves everyone, makes us laugh, and she is always the first teacher alumni want to visit."

Always a Blessing to Others

Mrs. Denton has graciously donated her AGH award equally to three other Catholic schools in honor of individuals she believes share her love of Catholic Education: St. Thomas More Parish School, in honor of her former Assistant Principal Kristen Thome and Fr. Hai Dang whom her class befriended during a trip to St. Mary’s Seminary; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, in honor of StJPII's Class of 2018 seminarian Fr. Preston Quintela; and Queen of Peace Catholic School, where current StJPII Principal Rebecca Bogard began her administrative career. Principal Bogard remarked, “Donna has a connection with students that is infectious. She is loving and yet has high expectations that students rise to meet, no matter their background, learning difference, or emotional needs. She is reflective in her teaching practice, and always thoughtful not to grow stagnant with her approach. Donna has a love for StJPII and continues to live out our mission in every way she serves the school community.”
