At St. John Paul II Catholic School, we believe in preparing students to utitlize technology to support curriculum, enhance learning, and enrich the academic environment. The integration of our Catholic belief system in the use of technology will better enable our students to meet the challenges of a changing global society.

Technology Highlights

Technology Curriculum

First-Fifth Grade

All St. John Paul II students receive comprehensive computer instruction.

First through fifth grade students visit the computer lab weekly to participate in the Computer Science program which utilizes the curriculum "CS Fundamentals" from code.org. Concepts taught in the elementary courses include digital citizenship, sequencing, binary, loops, nested loops, events, data, conditionals, and functions. The curriculum is supplemented with lesson in keyboarding, computational thinking, and Google Applications.

Middle School

All St. John Paul II students receive comprehensive computer instruction.

Middle School students apply their knowledge of Computer Science across the curriculum as they integrate technical skills into their regular core classes. Each course in Middle School integrates a project or research into their curriculum.

In addition, 6th grade students are exposed to a wide variety of topics in Computer Science over one 9-week grading period. Topics include digital citizenship, block programming, paper circuits, and squishy circuits. Programming skills that are introduced or expanded upon from the elementary curriculum include sequence, loops, parallelism, events, conditionals, operators, and data. Students are introduced to some features of physical computer, including electricity, insulators, conductors, and parallel and series circuits.

Advanced Technology

Advanced Technology will empower students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun! Students will learn about programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS, and data. Advanced Technology will inspire students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices. At the beginning of each semester, students will explore St. John Paul II Catholic School's Acceptable Use Policy and Chromebook Use Policy. Digital skills and keyboarding will be addressed throughout the year.

A hallmark of all Middle School Computer Science classes is that students participate in daily Spiritual Reflection, which serves as a reminder that Gospel values are imbedded in everything we do at St. John Paul II Catholic School.
